Lulekani Netball team national champs

Lulekani Primary School was recently crowned the national U13 netball school champions.

They won the title in Boksburg after outshining twenty schools from all over the country. Head coach, Khomisani Ceko, said she is proud of her girls for showing tenacity and excellence at a tournament of such stature. “I’m glad that all the preparations paid up. I still can’t believe that we are now the national champion, I’m beyond excited,” she said.

The win led Prophet Venus Zitha of Salvation Christ Ministries to award the team with a R10 000 cheque. The church also handed each player and their coaches a R650 cash prize and other gifts including netball T-shirts. The parents of the players also received groceries, and the player of the tournament, Lucia Mabunda received an extra R250 from the prophet.

Ceko told the Herald that although her team excels on the court, money remains a challenge as some of the players selected to represent the province are not able to make it to provincial camps as they do not have money to pay for kits, equipment, and transportation. “We have been invited to participate in another national tourney in Roodepoort in October, but we don’t have the money to cover the expenses for the trip.

“Everything, including three nights’ accommodation, is around R44 000. We are appealing to the community and businesses to help sponsor our trip,” she said.
