Limpopo Baobabs wins netball league

Limpopo Boababs is the 2023 Telkom Netball League (TNL 2023) second division champions.

This transpired after winning 55-37 against Kingdom Stars at the Heartfelt Arena in Pretoria on Saturday, July 1. The win has given them automatic promotion to the first division, and they bagged R80 000 in prize money. Cornelia Mupenda was honored as the Best Defender of the TNL 2023. She also won the Player of the Match award for her performance in the finals.

The Gauteng Jaguars are the first division champions after winning 59-51 against the Crinums. This is the Jaguars’ sixth league trophy and they have played in every final since 2014. As champions they took away a R200 000 cash prize; the runner-up team took home R100 000. The Overall Player of the Tournament is Khanyisa Chawana, who grew up in Burgersdorp village outside Tzaneen, but now stays in Bushbuckridge.

The TNL 2023 started in Seshego in May and in total 110 matches were played. The Kingdom Stars has been downgraded to the second division. The other Limpopo team that was part of the league, Lilies, also played in the second division. The team was established this year and has one player from the Mopani district, Jaqueline Hlungwani from Nkowankowa. The team struggled this year but is hoping for a better season next year.
