The event took place at the Ranch Hotel in Polokwane on Saturday, January 28. Mathye (44) walked away with a cash prize, a grocery voucher and electronic gadgets.
He told the Herald that he is over the moon with the win and that he dedicates the award to his wife, Nyeleti Mathye, who has always supported him. “I feel honoured to have been recognised by my employer. This motivates me to work and train even harder than before,” he said.
The prestigious event was attended by the minister of police, Bheki Cele, and the national police commissioner, Fannie Masemola, among other dignitaries.
Mathye participates in cycling, javelin, discus and shotput. In 2003 Mathye was involved in a car accident which left him paralysed from the waist down.
He spent three and half months in a hospital.

In 2011 he was employed as an administration clerk at the station. In November last year he was named Sportsman of the Year at the SAPS Provincial Prestige Awards held at Castle Dewildt Conference Facility in Modimolle. Station, congratulated Mathye and said he has held the Namakgale Police Station’s name high nationally. “We are overjoyed that we are the only station in Mopani to receive an accolade at the awards. “Mathye has never allowed his disability to hinder him. “We are inspired by his dedication and wish him more success in the future,” she concluded.
