Tennis club invites new players to join

“Tzaneen has a proud history of producing many excellent tennis players. For more than 50 years, members have represented our club at the provincial, national and international level, including Wimbledon,” says club president, Bernard Schoeman.

Currently, Zoë Venter is ranked first in Limpopo and number 14 in South Africa in the u/14 division for girls, and Marais Botha is ranked first in Limpopo in the u/18 division for boys. The club has 52 members and anyone, who wants to enjoy the social and health benefits offered, is welcome to join.

“As a sport that can be enjoyed by young and old alike, we are blessed to have members of all ages ranging from primary school level to 70+ years. “Tennis is a lifelong sport, affording the opportunity to people of all ages to get fit, gain strength, and to improve their overall well-being,” Schoeman adds.

The clubhouse in Crown Street was recently upgraded and offers great facilities for social gatherings and, of course, for playing the sport. All courts are under floodlights which are ideal for playing later into the evening. This year the club plans to host a social tournament every quarter and to have its club championships in the winter months.

“Members of the Tzaneen Tennis Club also participate in provincial and invitational tournaments in Polokwane, Louis Trichardt, and Phalaborwa. “We plan to host the clubs from these areas from time to time too,” says Schoeman.

For those who want to improve their game, Reenen Bergmann offers professional coaching to many of the schools in the area and also offers private lessons to individuals.

Applications to join can be made by contacting the treasurer, James Excell, on 084 852 2688. All new members are supplied with keys to the clubhouse and the tennis courts and can make unlimited use of all the facilities available at the club.
