Zandspruit Estate race ran in cool weather

Trail runners from Hoedspruit and its surroundings went out in numbers to participate in the 2021 Pam Golding Zandspruit Estate race on Saturday, 12 June at the Hoedspruit Wildlife Estate (HWE).

The lovely cool weather was just perfect and the cloud cover did not interrupt the beautiful mountain views.

About 197 runners converged at the Zandspruit Equine House, which was the starting and finishing point of the race.

The runners had to choose from three categories, 5km, 10km and 20km. Organiser Belinda Barkas said Covid-19 regulations were adhered to at all times.

“All participants and spectators firstly visited the assigned Covid station upon their arrival at which the necessary sanitising and completion of South African Association of Mountain Endurance Sport (SAAMES), the race village was carefully planned by Anthony Rance who ensured that sufficient spacing was provided at all stations including the start and finish areas,” she said.

She told Herald that they encouraged and insisted that there be social distancing and masks be worn at the official prizegiving.

The child-friendly race aims to build a trail-running community in Hoedspruit and its surroundings.

The race affords trail enthusiasts an opportunity to enjoy the company of African fauna whilst walking or running and keeping fit.

In April about 207 runners participated in the 2021 PamGolding Wildlife Estate Series.

The Zandspruit race will be followed by the Blyde Wildlife Estate race on 14 August.
