Cable theft leaves Sekororo Hospital high and dry

Sekororo Hospital faced a 4 day water outage due to cable theft, with Health MEC emphasising the need for community cooperation to prevent such incidents.

LIMPOPO – Between Wednesday September 25 and Saturday September 28, Sekororo Hospital was without water for four days due to cable theft in the area.

In response to the disruption, Sekororo Hospital relied on water tankers provided by the Maruleng Local Municipality to ensure that patient care continued.

Health MEC Dieketseng Mashego, condemned the theft that led to disruption of water. According to her, the department’s technicians were on site working to restore a stable water supply as quickly as possible.

“This event highlights the need for community awareness and cooperation to address issues of vandalism and theft in the region. “Water is essential for hygiene, sanitation, and the overall well-being of patients and staff. Without access to an adequate supply of clean water, hospitals are unable to operate effectively and provide the level of care that is needed in times of medical emergencies,” she said

She said criminal behaviour does not only endanger the lives of patients at hospital who depend on the department’s healthcare services but also places an unnecessary burden on their services.

“We call on the community to assist in identifying those responsible for this crime and to report any suspicious activities around our facilities.”

The department thanked the community for understanding and support during the disruption.

“The impact of the water shortage at Sekororo Hospital extends beyond the walls of the facility, affecting the surrounding community as well. Without access to clean water, residents in the area are at risk of disease, dehydration, and other health complications.”

Const Khomotso Roseline Hlokwe, SAPS communication officer for the district, confirmed to the Herald that a case of theft was opened at Maake Police Station, but no arrests have been made.
