Siyandhani residents to benefit from new road projects

On Friday, Greater Giyani Mayor Thandi Zitha introduced several contractors for road rehabilitation of street projects in Siyandhani village, Section E and F, aimed at improving and maintaining the ageing road infrastructure in the area.

Contractors are set to carry out road milling and prepare passages to redirect water flooding streets and houses during the rainy season in Section F. This will especially benefit residents in low-lying flood-prone areas, who have endured flooding for years. The road rehabilitation in Section F will also include the construction of a culvert bridge on one of the problematic roads near Usave, where water tends to accumulate on the road during rainy seasons. This aims to improve drainage and prevent waterlogging, ensuring a safer and smoother passage for vehicles and pedestrians alike.

The improved road conditions in Section F are expected to benefit the taxi industry by providing a smoother and safer route, reducing vehicle wear and tear, and potentially shortening travel times. This will positively impact both local taxi operators and commuters. When asked about plans to repair a problematic road in Section F that runs past True Vine Church, which has lost its tar due to lack of maintenance, the mayor stated that the road is in the pipeline and will be fixed as soon as funds become available.

“We’re aware of the road’s condition, but we decided not to fix it yet because we need to address the issue of floodwaters that often clog the road during rains. If we repair it now, there’s a risk that heavy rains could damage it again,” she said, adding that the municipality would set aside money for it in the next financial year. The project, which is expected to last for three months, is said to create jobs for 15 residents.

The mayor urged residents of Section F to support the project to prevent delays and avoid unnecessary inconvenience. “Anyone with concerns regarding the operation of the project should contact the municipality through the proper channels so that their issues can be addressed without disrupting the project,” said the mayor.
