The memorial lecture was hosted by Prof Patrick Sekgoka, executive of Data Science at Telkom CSB at Napscom High in honour of Nxumalo’s illustrious teaching career that profoundly impacted the lives of many families in the Mopani district. He taught at several secondary schools, including Molabosane High School, and teacher training colleges and he consistently produced excellent results.
He also lectured at the University of Venda on a part-time basis and mentored several students throughout his teaching career spanning at least 35 years. Sekgoka said the Telkom Foundation, in partnership with Huawei, BCX, Openserve, and Telkom provides supporting material to Gr12 math learners and their teachers. “Seven secondary schools participated in the event, including the family of the legendary maths teacher and his colleagues,” said Sekgoka.
“Learners received smartphones and promotional items from all the participating sponsors. “Most importantly, learners have been given access to the Telkom Learn platform, enabling them to benefit from the Telkom Foundation-Lightbulb partnership. “Learners can now access online learning support, including tutors and Gradesmatch services at zero cost.”

He said the presence and support of the Mopani West Education District office and the principals from Molabosane, Phangasasa, Napscom, Lefara, Nelson Ramodike, Mabushe, and BM Khabela ensured that the event was a success. Judy Vilakazi of the Telkom Foundation said the event was a living example of how education is still a powerful weapon for changing people’s lives.
“The late Nxumalo developed his eminent scholars into the professors and doctors they are today,” she said. She added that one of their colleagues, who is a proud offspring of the late Nxumalo, was the inspiration for this occasion. “Prof Sekgoka is fervently committed to altering the public’s perspective of mathematics education. He is passionate about applying geometric interpretation to help students grasp important mathematical ideas, and today he inspired the matric class of 2024.”
