Contract workers embark on a peaceful march in Phalaborwa

Hundreds of local mine and other contract workers in Phalaborwa, embarked on a peaceful march for better working conditions recently.

The demonstration was led by Ba-Phalaborwa Contractor’s Forum (BPCF) which is a structure that fights for the rights of contract workers in the Ba-Phalaborwa area. The march started in Wildevy Park, where they handed over memorandums to the companies, which included, PMC, Foskor, Zirconia, Transnet, Minopex and Mopani TVET College among others.

Abednego Mohale, treasurer of the forum, told the Herald that the main reason for the march, was to showcase their dissatisfaction with the treatment and working conditions of contract workers. He said the employees must have benefits such as medical aid, because the cost of living is high.

“We as contract workers feel ignored and life is hard out there, we therefore request the umbrella company to consider the following: When a company appoints a new contractor, we need previous workers to be automatically included in the contract,” he said. Mopani TVET College and PMC told the Herald that they will issue a formal response. At the time of going to print no response has been received yet
