Lomèo helps vendors sell marula products

Lomèo’s Kitchen, owned by fashion designer Sir Lomèo, recently hosted a vibrant Marula Chillas event, bringing together young and old from the Khaxani village of Giyani to celebrate a beloved tradition: marula beer.

Despite some initial hesitation among the youth, Lomèo’s passion for the Tsonga culture sparked a renewed interest in the age-old beverage. With lively music and laughter filling the air, the Marula Chillas became a lively gathering where the community bonded over shared heritage and a newfound appreciation for marula. “What made the event special was my inclusive approach.

Not only did I showcase my own marula beer, but I also invited other local brewers to sell their products, providing economic opportunities for unemployed individuals in the community,” he said. Lomèo’s team, consisting of his loyal Quincy and the young but eager Shaun, worked tirelessly to ensure the event’s success.

“Behind the scenes, I found guidance and inspiration from my mentors: Conny, my mother, and Mmangwako, my grandmother. Their wisdom and support fueled my vision of preserving and promoting the Tsonga culture. Together, they instilled in me the importance of community and tradition, shaping the ethos of the Marula Chillas into a celebration of unity and resilience,” added Sir Lomèo.

As the day unfolded, the Marula Chillas evolved into more than just a celebration of a traditional brew, but a symbol of unity, culture and community resilience. Through simple gestures and shared moments, Lomèo and his kitchen exemplified the beauty of embracing one’s roots and bringing people together in celebration.
