Rungula aims to help disadvantaged people

A 15-year-old Giyani praise singer was named the first runner-up in the Limpopo round of the World Scholar’s Cup.

Rungula Dinea Maluleke from Thomo village says she has a special place in her heart for old and disadvantaged people. “Ever since childhood, I have been giving an extra hand to those in need. I used to help old people with their household chores and various activities. But I recently realised that I needed to do something that will help and benefit anyone disadvantaged,” she says.

In 2022 she started debating, which she says helped her with her public speaking skills. She says she wants to use these skills to change the world. “Late 2021 I drew up a plan of a foundation that I wanted to start and sent it to my favourite primary school teacher explaining my vision for wanting to help people and how I saw the foundation in the next few years.

“Early last year I joined a poetry competition hosted by N’wa-Jika. Although I was not successful, I learned a lot and it inspired me to do better and get what I want,” adds Rungula. She entered the World Scholar’s Cup’s Limpopo round and was named the first runner-up for the whole province. She wants to name her foundation The Peace Foundation and although the foundation is not registered yet, she hopes to build a better South Africa by helping people in need through the foundation.

“We donate sanitary pads, school uniforms, food, and basic things that people may need. We aim to ensure that everyone is treated equally regardless of their standard of living. We also educate school children on social issues that affect our society such as GBV and a whole lot more,” she concludes.
