Slow recovery for Sherry

Despite a serious intravenous port infection, Hoedspruit cancer sufferer, Sherry de Boer, remains resilient and is slowly recovering.

According to Anthony de Boer, Sherry’s father-in-law, Sherry is positive and remains resolute “that she has business to complete on this planet and so has a reason to live”. Sherry has been battling Hodgkin’s lymphoma for the past 13 years. In this time, she has had 200 bags of chemo, more than 40 sessions of radiation, one failed autologous stem cell transplant, a failed “new” drug trial and received a donor stem cell transplant earlier this year from a donor in Sweden.

Although Sherry was briefly back at home with her husband Neil and daughter Kayden-Rein, she is currently back in hospital in Pretoria where she is still grappling with a stem cell transplant-related Cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection. To fight the CMV, she has received an array of treatments, among other medications imported from Germany. Only 50% of the cost of R200 000 for the 30-day course treatment was covered by their medical aid.

Sherry faced a further serious setback with an intravenous port infection leading to significant weight loss and illness. “Thankfully, with medical intervention, she is now recovering and gradually regaining her strength.” “Despite the complexities, our medical team has been tirelessly working to find effective treatments, seeking special approvals when necessary. Though the infection persists, we have seen some positive responses to the treatments,” says Anthony.

According to Anthony, the Supporting Sherry campaign on Back-a-Buddy to raise money for her treatment has been the backbone of Sherry’s cancer journey. “We are deeply grateful for your generosity and kindness for donating to Sherry’s treatment. Sherry has been bravely battling her illness, facing challenges that would test anyone’s strength. “Your support has not only provided crucial financial assistance but also uplifted our spirits. It’s a reminder that together, we can overcome even the toughest challenges,” he says. Currently, the De Boer family has raised R197 232.28 of the R250 000 target they need for Sherry’s treatment.
