Gifts gathered for Santa Shoebox in Hoedspruit

A bounty of shoeboxes filled with gifts adorned the Rhino Revolution office in Hoedspruit this past weekend as local donors excitedly handed over their beautifully created boxes to the Santa Shoebox team.

The Hoedspruit Santa Shoebox project is coordinated by Seeds of Light and is currently in full swing. “The Santa Shoebox project originated in Cape Town in 2006 with a humble 180 shoeboxes. In 17 years it has grown in leaps and bounds, with the number of shoeboxes donated nationally reaching a total of 1 152 587,” said Lynn Watson of Seeds of Light. “Southern Cross Schools once again allowed the learners to join in the community spirit and the learners delivered over 280 boxes.

“The Klaserie Drift Safari Camp team delivered over 30 boxes, and many other local donors are helping to make this year a success,” she said. According to her, starting this week, the boxes will be delivered to facilities in Limpopo and Mpumalanga accompanied by celebrations and the opening of the gifts. “For many of these young people, this will be the only gift they receive for the holidays,” Watson said.

The success of the project can largely be attributed to its nature; donors give gifts of essential items and treats to children whose names, ages, and genders are known. The minimum eight required items are a toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, a washcloth, sweets, a toy, school supplies, and an outfit of clothing, all new, unused, and age-appropriate. “The project is supported by many volunteers and kind-hearted people who give freely of their time, energy, and expertise without remuneration.

“It also relies on the generous backing of various sponsors pledging monetary or pro bono support,” Watson said. “Many companies, especially local lodges, involve their staff members to pledge a Santa Shoebox as part of their Corporate Social Investment (CSI) programme.” For more information on the project, visit www.santashoebox.org.za, or for more on the Hoedspruit effort, email lynn@seedsoflight.org
