Pangolin Barney is ready to make it on his own

Barney, a ground pangolin that fell victim to poaching, has fully recovered and has adapted to his environment to the point where his monitoring tags are about to be removed.

Amy Aucamp-Clark of Scales Pangolin Rescue Fund says they were involved with Barney following his rescue, an extensive rehabilitation process, and introduction into his natural habitat in January this year. “At the time of his release, Barney weighed 9.37kg, and today, he has impressively bulked up to an astonishing 11.97 kg.

The moment has come to remove his monitoring tags and bid farewell to this magnificent creature,” she says. “We extend our heartfelt appreciation to the release site for their diligent monitoring and care of Barney and express our profound gratitude to Casey Cole McKee for her invaluable assistance.

It is stories like Barney’s that underscore the significance of our work, and we take immense pride in his remarkable journey and the dedicated team that saved his life,” says Aucamp-Clark. “Our mission to protect these incredible creatures relies entirely on the generosity of individuals. No donation is too large or too small; every contribution makes a significant impact.”

Coming together from a wide variety of backgrounds and experiences, the Scales Pangolin Rescue Fund is a collaboration of like-minded organisations and individuals working together to save pangolins from the illegal wildlife trade, she says.
