D1909 road in Hoedspruit finally rehabilitated

Hoedspruit residents are sighing a sigh of relief after work on a 6-kilometre stretch of the D1909 road was finally completed.

Limpopo MEC for Public Works, Roads and Infrastructure, Nkakareng Rakgoale, said the department and the Roads Agency Limpopo (RAL) are determined to ensure that the existing roads infrastructure in the province is maintained. She was speaking at the Maruleng Local Municipality (MLM) during a ceremony to hand over the newly rehabilitated D1909 which links the R40 and the Eastgate Airport.

She said it was a preventative maintenance project aimed at enhancing the road infrastructure within the municipality. “It has achieved a significant milestone in its objective to provide an efficient and reliable road network in the area,” she said. The MEC also conducted a sodturning ceremony for the second phase of the 17-kilometer stretch of the road which will bring further improvements essential for tourism and agriculture in the area.

“I am delighted that we have managed to improve the condition of the road as it carries a lot of traffic from the airport,” she added. Community members that utilise the road say they appreciate the improvements on the road. “I am a farmer and I want to thank the authorities for rehabilitating this road. Things are coming together and there is hope.

“The road was in a terrible state and hopefully with these improvements more business will come in and we will be able to create more jobs,” he said. RAL is expected to complete the second phase by February next year. The MEC was accompanied by the Maruleng Municipality Mayor, Tsheko Musolwa and councillors from both the local municipality and the Mopani District Municipality.
