Stay authentic to who you are-Dr Mdlhuli

A local astronomer recently inspired Hoedspruit High School learners to embrace he wonders of the cosmos.

Dr. Joyful Mdlhuli has a doctor’s degree in Astronomy and is connected to the Office of Astronomy for Development in Hoedspruit. During an interview with Sterna Marx of Hoedspruit High after visiting the school, Mdlhuli said she has always loved Physics. “During my upbringing, I had no inkling that a career in Physics or Astronomy was a viable option. It was only as I progressed through university that I discovered these incredible paths,” she said.

“I often share with people that Physics seemed to find me, rather than the other way around.” She said in her early years, her awareness of potential career choices was limited to the more traditional and commonly known paths, such as engineering, medicine, teaching, and l. However, as she embarked on her university education, her curiosity and passion for understanding the natural world grew exponentially.

“I was captivated by the mysteries of the universe and the laws governing its behaviour. This newfound fascination led me to explore Physics and, subsequently, Astronomy, where I found myself utterly enamored with the wonders of the cosmos. “I consider myself fortunate to have stumbled upon these scientific disciplines, and I am eager to share my experiences with others to help them recognise the incredible opportunities available.

“By spreading awareness and breaking the barriers of limited career perceptions, we can inspire more young minds to explore these captivating fields of study,” added Mdlhuli. Her passion for Physics and the pursuit of knowledge has led her to the Office of Astronomy for Development, where she has the opportunity to combine two things that she is truly passionate about, Physics and community engagement.

“In this role, I can utilise my expertise to explore the fundamental nature of our universe and share my knowledge and enthusiasm with the broader community. “By engaging with the community, I aim to inspire curiosity and interest in Physics among people of all ages and backgrounds. “Through outreach programmes, workshops, and educational initiatives, I hope to demonstrate the wonders of the cosmos and the significance of scientific research in shaping our understanding of the world around us,” she added.

“Back in my home area of Hoedspruit, I have come to realise just how breathtaking our night sky is. I encourage anyone reading this to take a moment from their busy schedules and indulge in the mesmerising display of stars above us. “Gazing at the night sky can be an incredibly humbling and inspiring experience, reminding us of the vastness of our universe and our place within it,” she added. She left learners with these words:

“Believe in yourself and take the leap! Embrace the flow of life. It’s a journey filled with unexpected surprises, some delightful and others challenging. “Along the way, you’ll encounter obstacles that may feel overwhelming, but remember, you possess a strength that can overcome any adversity. Stay authentic to who you are, treat yourself with kindness, and grant yourself the space to evolve and flourish.”
