Salty Sista’s AirBnB is nearing completion

Anticipation is growing for Hoedspruit’s own AirBnB OMG Fund winner to complete her unique dwelling.

Liezel Maderal Maree, also known as the ‘Salty Sista’, was among 100 talented individuals chosen for a worldwide initiative by AirBnB in an effort to expand the app’s accommodation options. The OMG Fund awarded individuals like Maree $100 000 each to transform their visions into tangible projects that benefit their communities. After she was announced a winner, construction started in January and she is now in the process of erecting the roof.

The building incorporates natural and up-cycled materials such as Himalayan salt blocks, weathered trees, wine bottles, boulders, tyres, and even features a Landrover windscreen artfully collated to create a soothing and therapeutic atmosphere. “The design and layout have been meticulously planned to ensure optimal relaxation and rejuvenation for visitors. From the dimmed lighting to the gentle sound of flowing water, every element has been carefully considered to create a serene ambiance.

Wastewater will be gravity filtered before being emptied into a greenhouse and gas or fire will heat water,” adds Maree. Her venue will feature a salt cave. “Salt therapy, also known as halotherapy, has gained popularity in recent years due to its numerous health benefits.” She says the microclimate inside the cave helps to cleanse and detoxify the respiratory system, promoting better breathing and overall wellness.

With the completion of this project, the local community will have access to a unique accommodation and wellness experience that enhances their physical and mental well-being. “I am planning to install an aerial yoga sling in the salt cave to make it the perfect location for yoga and meditation.” Maree is planning to launch towards mid-August with a masquerade party. But for now, she is rushing to finish by her deadline provided by AirBnB, and the details and art installations such as the mosaics will be taking up most of her time.

Maree thanked the support and guidance she has received from the Hoedspruit locals. “This remarkable project not only highlights the power of entrepreneurship but also underscores the significance of supporting local initiatives. It is set to become a landmark, symbolising the transformative impact that individuals with vision and determination can have on the world around them,” concludes Maree.
