Health MEC apologises for nurses’ behaviour

The MEC for Health in Limpopo, Dr Phophi Ramathuba, has apologised to the Selowa family after a video on social media showed a clinic sister arguing with a patient at Maake Clinic.

Ramathuba visited the clinic recently, to address stakeholders on the unfortunate incident. The video shows a woman, known to the Herald as Mrs Selomo, questioning the nurse, known as Sr Mothapo, on why she is not attending to her very sick child. “Sister, we have been here for 30 minutes to an hour for an emergency, and you are still busy talking on the phone,” Selowa asks.

The sister on duty, dressed in pajamas and a work jersey, replies that she is talking to a pregnant patient and if the woman has a problem, she can go ahead and contact the provincial department. The nurse then states that she usually works as the only sister on night duty and sometimes assists up to five pregnant women at once.

During the address the MEC gave the leadership of the health facility a tongue lashing, saying that there is no way that a sister can work alone and there must be a better way of making sure that the workload is managed better. She also promised to restructure the clinic and for disciplinary measures to be instituted against the sister.

“We are asking for forgiveness to the Selowa family, Maake community and all stakeholders. We are ashamed of what we saw,” she said. The sister and the disgruntled woman appeared on camera and declared that they have forgiven each other.
