Hlokomela Clinic celebrates 18 years of support and healing

June 20 marked a significant milestone in the life of Hlokomela as the organisation turned eighteen.

“Eighteen years ago, Hlokomela came into this world, hoping to make a small difference in the farming community of Hoedspruit through the funders and donors that helped us take our first steps,” said MJ Du Preez, media and marketing manager at Hlokomela. “Starting off as an HIV/Aids awareness programme on local farms, with only a hand full of staff members, we slowly grew into the primary healthcare facility we are today.

“The journey has been filled with growth, learning, and countless memorable moments. Our staff over the years have navigated the ups and downs with resilience and a spirit that inspires everyone around them.” He said that while so many of their friends, colleagues, and partners are not here anymore to see the fruits of their labour, the work continues.

“We cherish the precious moments we’ve had as a team, we proudly celebrate our accomplishments thus far, and we hope that we can continue to support the community of Hoedspruit in a meaningful way for many years to come.” He said while the word ‘hlokomela’ means to ‘take care of’, or ‘to look after’, the last 18 years have taught them that it is just as much about ‘healing’. “Now more than ever we need to support each other to heal as individuals, to heal as a community, and to heal as a country.

“Not just in relation to health and medicine, but to our humanity. He congratulated the director, Christine Du Preez, on this remarkable milestone. “May you continue to lead with passion and drive and may your impact on the sector only grow stronger with each passing year. We thank every person, organisation, business, and funder, that has helped us on our journey. Big or small. We would not have been able to do what we have done without your support,” concluded MJ.
