Nkowankowa farmer teaches young learners about agriculture

Crop and poultry farmer, Theodorah Mongwe, is taking her skills and experience to the classroom.

She has started an initiative in partnership with schools in Tzaneen to teach learners the basics of agriculture. The objective of the program is to change the mindset of youngsters that farming is for old people. She teaches them that food can be produced from a young age and that they too can contribute to the food production of the country.

“I believe agriculture plays a big role in fighting poverty and building the country’s economy. “I don’t believe that people should wait or depend on the government for everything. “By being involved in agriculture, we can assist government with food production and in turn, boost our economy,” she said. Mongwe believes that if every household had its own backyard garden, there would not be hunger.

Her farming journey began after completing her occupational health management qualification and could not find employment. That led her to start her own business, Uhlurile Chickens and she eventually ventured into crops as well. She currently has three farms where she produces crops such as spinach, butternut, and green beans. Mongwe also farms with broiler chickens that produce eggs which she sells to the residents of Nkowankowa.
