Local women crochet 475 blocks

A countrywide crochet safari marathon was supported by the ATKV Arendsnes from May 26 to 27.

A ‘crocheting for charity’ event in Hoedspruit reaped no less than 475 blocks. In total the marathon saw a combined amount of 70 805 squares produced countrywide, breaking the current world record.

Four women from Hoedspruit, Monica Potgieter, Corné du Plessis, Anita Schoeman, and Edna Malan stayed up the entire 30 hours of the marathon; from 12:00 on Friday to 18:00 the next day, crocheting the 20cm x 20cm squares. “Not even load-shedding could stop us from crocheting.

We had four-hour load-shedding at the church, so we went to the Total filling station to find some light to continue crocheting; we then went to Mugg&Bean and continued there.” Monica, who initiated the crocheting, said 108 venues around the country took part in the event. “Supporters brought us food, coffee, and tea to help us through the night.”

She thanked everyone who helped with the supplies for crocheting. “It would not be possible if they did not help us,” she said. The previous record was 27 800 crocheted squares. While the final tally will be made on June 9, it took 1.77 tons of yarn from 17 700 balls, totalling 4 531km, to make the 70 805 squares.
