D3840 road is nearly completed

After many years of the D3840 road being in bad conditions with more potholes than tar, motorists will have a sigh relief knowing that the road is almost done.

Road Agency Limpopo (RAL) in conjunction with the Greater Giyani Municipality did a technical site handover for the construction of the third phase of a 6km stretch of the Giyani-Phalaborwa road, the D3840. The second phase has been underway since March 6, and construction was supposed to last for a month, or at least until May 10 at most; however, there has been a delay in the completion of the project.

According to the head of public roads and transport in Greater Giyani Municipality, Richard Mashale, the delay was caused by a shortage of concrete needed for road surfacing. “They are almost complete, and we expect that part of the road to open for traffic within a week or two,” he said. The third phase of the road starts from Makhuva village and stretches six kilometres towards Giyani.

Maintenance is being done backward along the same road to repair potholes and other defects not covered by the second construction phase. “One of the reasons we had to start from the top and come down backward was because we had to prioritise the area where the road had the most defects and start from there first.

By the time the construction is completed, the entire road would be used even without the third phase of the road which has fewer defects,” he said. The new phase is expected to be complete in six months and construction is expected to start within days. “Construction can start immediately after the submission of little outstanding paperwork that RAL needs from the contractor,” he said.
