100 years of ‘Grace’ for retired teacher

The recent centenarian Elizabeth Grace Schoeman is still going strong.

Elizabeth Grace Schoeman, a retired teacher, celebrated her 100th birthday on June 7.

She was born in 1923 and grew up in Rondebosch in Cape Town and attended the Rustenburg Girl’s High School. Grace furthered her career as a schoolteacher at Mowbray College for teachers in 1941.

In 1944 she married Tony Schoeman and the couple settled in the Lowveld. They had four children, Hilda, Carl, Johan and Beatrix.

Grace was a teacher until she retired from Duiwelskloof Primary School where she became head of her department. In her last years at Duiwelskloof Primary School, she taught English to Grade 1, Grade 2 and Grade 3 pupils, all in one class.

She lived in Raptors View in Hoedspruit with her daughters Hilda and Beatrix until she was placed in frail care with Priscilla Eva in Kampersrus where she still resides. She enjoys very good health and still walks with aid.

“Grace loves to spend her morning’s out on the veranda doing puzzles, educational games, and making things by hand. She meticulously made 50 pink roses with crinkle paper for her 100th birthday,” says Hilda Cavill Taylor, her daughter.

“Aunty Grace, as we fondly call her, is an inspiration to all who meet her and has a delightful sense of humour and an infectious laugh. She inspires us with her will to get up every morning with her beautiful smile and she enjoys whatever the day brings,” says Eva.
