Carter sells cookies for a good cause

Six-year-old Carter Siyamthanda De Wet, a Grade 1 learner at Southern Cross School, raised R2 000 at the Hoedspruit Farmer’s Market by selling homemade cookies.

He managed to sell 172 cookies at the market held on April 1. He baked all the cookies himself, from start to finish. His mother, Lisa De Wet, said that Carter is always looking for ideas on what he can do to help others. “I am a nurse running a clinic in Hoedspruit specialising in mother and child health services, so I have an interest in childhood cancer.

“I follow Rainbows and Smiles on Facebook, an organisation that helps children with cancer. One day an advert came up for their community project to bake cookies for children with cancer. It immediately caught Carter’s eye and he jumped up and said that is what he
wants to do.

Carter prepares his dough.

“I am super proud of him that at this young age, he is thinking about ways that he can help other people,” she said. Carter said that “children with cancer are sick and sad and I want to make them feel better”. The money will be donated to Rainbows and Smiles.
