No new FMD in Mopani region

There have been no new cases of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) reported in the Mopani region of the Limpopo province in 2023.

The Herald spoke to Dr. Vonani Mashau, a state veterinarian in the Mopani region. He said no new positive cases of this disease have been confirmed since last year. “We have not diagnosed any FMD cases in Mopani and there is no need for panic,” said Mashau. He added that should there be a confirmed case or outbreak, a report will be released by the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (DARD). Foot-and-mouth disease is a viral disease causing wounds or lesions in the mouth and feet and hooves of livestock mainly cattle, pigs, goats, and sheep.

The disease can be seen in animals that show excessive salivation and lameness or limping. Other signs include blisters and sores in the mouth, gums lips, and tongue of the animal making it difficult to eat and often causing drooling. Blisters and sores between the toes and where the hooves join the skin can cause the animal to limp. Cows can develop sores on their teats resulting in a drop in milk production. FMD does not cause disease in humans and meat can still be consumed from FMD-infected animals.

However, farmers and livestock owners are urged to immediately inform officials in the DARD and restrict the movement of affected livestock should signs of FMD be observed. The disease can be controlled and prevented by vaccinating cattle in areas where vaccination is required.
