Defenders on a roll

Mpheni Home Defenders FC continued their dominance in the ABC Motsepe Stream-A league as they edged out Vondwe Xi Bullets 1-0 in a thrilling encounter at Hoerskool Sports Ground on Saturday in Elim.

It was a do-or-die match for the Defenders host team, as they looked to put distance between themselves and the Giyani Happy Boys who are an imminent threat to their stay at the league’s top position. However, during the first half of the match, it looked as though the Vondwe Xi Bullets were going to hold them down to a draw as both sides failed to score. The deciding goal finally came in the second half, when Mpheni Home Defenders managed to sneak in a goal that put them ahead of Vondwe Xi Bullets.

The score remained 1-0 until the referee blew the final whistle to end the match. The win took Mpheni Home Defenders’ points tally at the top of the log to 27 in 10 matches, whereas Giyani Happy Boys trail behind with 26 points in 11 matches. Playing against a team in the third spot in the league with 16 points out of 11 matches, Giyani Happy Boys was counting on Mpheni Home Defenders to lose the match so they could inch closer towards them, but things did not go according to their wish.

Although not strong enough to be regarded as a threat to the league’s championship, Vondwe Xi Bullets is a fairly strong team that packs some good punches. It was unlikely that the Mpheni Home Defenders was to be handed an easy win over them and the match on Saturday was not a walk in the park, they had to work for their win.
