Hoedies help furry friends

Volunteers of Hoedspruit Animal Outreach (HALO) were joined by a team from EcoLife Expeditions at the Oaks and Mulalani on Saturday for the organization's first outreach of the year.

HALO said they saw a total of 150 dogs. “It was a great turnout and we were happy to see that many loyal dogs and their owners came back.” With the rains and high summer temperatures, ticks and fleas are a problem which made their dipping station very busy. HALO took in eight dogs that were in need of further treatment.

Two puppies with severe tick bite fever and flea infestation received antibiotics and will be fed chicken livers to replenish their blood levels. “Another dog had an abscess and after removing a total of 60ml of fluid, the fluid came back in no time, so it will receive a check-up from the veterinarian to find out where the fluid is coming from. One dog had deep wounds on the leg from being caught in barbed wire and was stitched up by the veterinarian as well. A dog called Blackie was taken in with a broken leg.

“We took him to the vet after hours as the dog was in enormous pain. Fortunately, the break could be splinted so with pain medication and crate rest, Blackie is feeling much better,” HALO said. “Lastly we had three urgent requests for sterilisation, two pregnant females and one male. HALO will sterilise them this week to prevent unwanted litter.” Residents who would like to assist HALO with the cost of treating these dogs, can contact them at 082 692 3688.
