Mayor welcomes new babies

Ba-Phalaborwa Municipality mayor, Merriam Malatji has welcomed the New Year's babies at Maphuta Malatji Hospital in Namakgale on January 1.

The hospital had three newborns on the day, one boy and two girls. She showered the new bundles of joy with gifts such as bathing tubs, nappies, and clothes. The gifts were sponsored by the Enock Mathebula Foundation. She congratulated the mothers and applauded the hospital for their dedication. She also thanked the foundation for donating gifts to New Year’s babies for the past four years.

She was accompanied by the speaker, Oliver Mabunda, Joe Mampuru, Dr. Lucas Pilusa, and David Ndlozi. Meanwhile, 43 babies, 18 boys, and 24 girls were born on New Year’s Day at public hospitals and clinics in the Mopani district. One boy was born at Mediclinic Tzaneen. According to the Department of Health in Limpopo, the total of 43 deliveries included nine teenage mothers between 15 and 17 years.

These teens gave birth at Letaba Hospital. For the entire Limpopo province, a total of 215 babies were delivered on New Year’s Day in 2022, 107 boys and 108 girls, with 24 teenage mothers. In 2023 a total of 193 babies were delivered on New Year’s Day, 27 fewer compared to 2022.
