Mob chases alleged robber to ‘death’

Police in Giyani have opened an inquest after the body of an unknown man was discovered in Homu-14B next to Nyukani Private School on Wednesday.

According to a police statement, the deceased was earlier seen with an accomplice in Homu-14A robbing grade 12 students of their school tablets at around 16:00. On the same street, they attempted to rob a spaza shop.

The owner of the spaza shop alerted community members in the area who chased after them. The suspects allegedly fled to the bushes towards the NyuKani Education Centre while shooting in the air with their firearms in an attempt to scare off the pursuing community members.

Community members caught up with one of the suspects, aged between 28 and 35, and allegedly beat him. On arrival at the scene, the police recovered a firearm that was used in the robbery lying next to the body of the suspect with an empty magazine.

Police request community members in the area to come forward with information that can assist in tracking down the other suspect as well as arresting those responsible for the alleged murder.
