Robbery is rife in Letsitele

Robberies at both residential and non-residential premises are on the rise in the Tzaneen region.

The small town of Letsitele has recorded a 900% increase in residential robberies and a 20% rise in non-residential areas. This is according to the 2022/2023 crime stats that were recently released by the Minister of Police, Bheki Cele. The stats indicate that the Letsitele Police Station recorded nine more cases of residential robberies between January and March 2023 compared to one case reported last year during the same period.

According to the stats, Tzaneen has seen a 200% increase in robberies at non-residential premises. Nine cases of robberies, six more when compared to the three cases reported last year at the same time, were reported. The Herald has reported on robberies at business premises in town, especially laptops and other electronic gadgets. Recently, a Tzaneen resident had her car stolen at her own home.

In March this year, the Tzaneen Police Station commander, Brig Edward Masinamela, told the Herald that robberies and burglaries at residential and business premises remain problematic. “We have recorded a number of robberies in Aqua Park, especially laptops and televisions. In Bolobedu South robberies are also prevalent. In most townships and villages, foreign national shops are targeted,” he said.

Tzaneen Police Station spokesperson, Sgt Maurice Nkhwashu, stated that criminals have become more advanced in their methods and steal the motors of motorised gates, and as a result, they are able to enter premises with ease. He advised homeowners to let neighbours know when they go on holiday so that they can be on the lookout for any movements, and lock doors and windows when they are away. He also said businesses must have proper security features in order to have the properties protected from thieves. To report any criminal activities, call 08600 10111.
