Police investigate murder

Police in Giyani are investigating the murder of a foreign national after his body was found inside a house in Mavalani village on Friday.

Neighbours alerted the police after they noticed a smell coming from the house. Police say the neighbours knocked on the door without response. They then reported it to the local headman. The headman along with the community policing forum (CPF) members opened the house and was met with a body lying on the bed with an open wound to the stomach.

Police were summoned to the scene and a case of murder was opened. The deceased was identified as Mojalefa Thayisi from Lesotho. Police say his age is unknown as no identity documents could be found.

They say it is not clear what he was doing in the village, but it is suspected that he might be part of a gang that is mining illegally in the area. “The ongoing investigation will determine the cause of death as well as determine whether he was part of an illegal mining gang or not,” explained Sgt Ridgewell Rikhotso.
