Rapist gets life sentence

22-year-old Makhofani Seun Mashimbye from Bode village in Dzingidzingi was sentenced to life imprisonment for rape in the Giyani Regional Court on Thursday, March 17.

The sentencing comes after the accused raped a 15-year-old girl in Dzingidzingi village nearly four years ago. It was testified that on September 9, 2018, the victim was walking home at about 21:30 after attending a party when she was confronted by four men. One of the men produced a knife and threatened to stab her before he dragged her to one of his friends’ houses.

He then instructed his three friends to rape her and threatened to stab them with a knife if they refuse. In the process one of the men who refused managed to escape from the house. The other two men raped the victim. Mashimbuye then also raped the girl. Afterward one of the two men accompanied the girl to the police station to report the incident.

A case of rape was opened and the men were arrested. The case was assigned to Sgt Derick Masondo of Giyani Family Violence, Child Protection, and Sexual Offences (FCS) for investigation. During the court proceedings, the three men who were threatened turned into state witnesses against Mashimbuye.
