Alleged thief becomes victim of hit and run

An unknown man became the victim of a hit and run on the R81 road after he was allegedly chased by community members after he was found committing a crime at a household on March 5 in Dzingidzingi village.

Police say they received a complaint of alleged mob justice on Saturday. While they were on their way to attend to the complaint, they were summoned to the scene of an accident on the R81 road.

“Upon their arrival, police were told that the victim, who was killed by the car, was assaulted by community members from the village. “The deceased was reportedly killed by a speeding car. He was not wearing any clothes and was badly injured.

“The age of the man has been estimated between 25 to 34 years. Cases of culpable homicide and hit and run are under investigation,” said Const. Ridgewell Rikhotso of the Giyani police. He said all stakeholders were summoned to the scene of the crime and members of the emergency services certified the man dead.

Police in Giyani is appealing to the community to assist in locating the family of the deceased.
