Nicole’s invention to assist community with clean water

A young man from Mashishimale village outside Phalaborwa is requesting help with his latest invention.

Nicole Selepe (21) has invented a borehole water cleaning system in order to assist the local community to drink clean water. However, a lack of resources and a professional laboratory are keeping his project on hold. He told the Herald that the idea to build the machine came in 2020 after the majority of the community became dependent on borehole water.

The invention cleans the salty water and purifies it. Salty water can cause kidney stones and diarrhea. He built the machine from recycled materials since he cannot afford to buy new materials. Last year at the Eskom Science Expo, he was awarded a gold medal and certificate for the invention.

In 2019, at the expo, he attained a silver medal and certificate for his self-watering system which waters plants in the mornings and evenings. After passing grade 12 last year at Lebeko Secondary School, he has not been able to enroll in further education due to a lack of finance.

He was accepted at Capricorn TVET in Polokwane, but could not go because he didn’t have the money for registration and accommodation. However, he never allows life setbacks to keep him from bringing solutions to human problems.

He has started working on a cellphone battery project with dual charging capabilities through electricity and solar energy. Anyone willing to assist the young man can contact him on 066 427 3489.
