‘Mopani fails to deliver water’

“I have lost interest in any empty promises from the administration led by the ANC, specifically when it comes to water as a basic service to the public.” Democratic Alliance (DA) councillor in the Mopani District Municipality, Rodney Tito, told the Herald that Mopani has failed, and is still failing, to deliver clean water to communities.

“Currently we have people who share water sources with animals. Poor villagers buy water from those who have boreholes and bakkies to fetch water from the plants,” he said. “I personally do not believe what the executive mayor says in resolving the water issue in our district as they have had eight years to resolve this problem since the Lepelle Northern Water Board project was implemented in 2014.

“The project reportedly collapsed and R3 billion was allocated for the Giyani Bulk Water project. “This project also collapsed in 2018 after allegations of corruption and no one has been held accountable for the mismanagement of billions of Rand.”

He said the district has failed to “run clean water into the taps of 55 villages in Giyani after failing to hold Lepelle Northern Water accountable”. “What makes me lose hope is that the R3.2 billion that is not accounted for, so where’s the money, and where is the district going to get the funds to further the project. We are tired of being bullied.

I received several complaints from workers who didn’t get paid for months (especially their December salaries). “How can they employ more people while failing to pay salaries of those already employed by the municipality?”
