Shayi says work on major roads ongoing

There has been ongoing work to improve the condition of major roads and internal streets.

This is according to Mopani District Municipality executive mayor Pule Shayi who was giving the State of the District Address last week which outlined the work done by the municipality and projects earmarked for this financial year.

In terms of road upgrades, Shayi said the Greater Giyani Municipality had done work as part of the Makosha Access Road Project among others. The municipality has also tarred the road from Homu 14B to Homu 14A, and also completed Phase two of the Giyani Section E project and 2,3km paving of internal streets at Bode. “The 3,8 km road to Mbaula has also been tarred during this period, as we continued with our programme of advancing people’s power in every community.”

According to Shayi at least 44,9 km of access roads have been upgraded from gravel to paving in the Greater Letaba Municipality since 2016 and they have also constructed 15 low-level bridges in various communities across that municipality.

D3840 is one of the roads which is undergoing rehabilitation. The photo was taken last year by Mashudu Demana.

“We are pleased with the work on the upgrade of roads such as the Gavaza to Mafarana, the Tickyline, Glassworks, Myakayaka, Mineview, Burgersdorp road, the Mbambamencisi Access Road, the Morutji to Matswi as well as the Mopye High School access roads amongst others.

He said in a bid to support the work led by local municipalities, they have in the past financial year purchased five graders to assist in the maintenance of gravel roads across the district.

“We are now finalizing the registration process so they can be released to service our communities,” Shayi said there was ongoing work around the rehabilitation of some of our major roads in the district, including the D3840 Giyani to Phalaborwa road, D3200 in Mohlabaneng and the D11 Mamaila road.
