7 minors test positive for Covid-19 at care centre

“The seven minors who tested positive have immediately been isolated and are being closely monitored by health professionals from our clinic."

Measures have been put in place to curb the further spread of Covid-19 at the Mavambe Secure Care Centre outside Malamulele after seven minors tested positive.

This is according to spokesperson Witness Tiva who said seven out of 41 minors had tested positive for the virus. The centre accommodates children who are in conflict with the law and are undergoing court and various rehabilitation processes.

The Department of Health conducted mass testing after one of the occupants was transferred to Gauteng for substance abuse rehabilitation.

“It was detected just before he could be admitted through the inpatient program there. Social workers are providing psychosocial support to the children who are infected in Mavambe.”

“The seven minors who tested positive have immediately been isolated and are being closely monitored by health professionals from our clinic. Tests were conducted on all the 41 children and seven tested positive for Covid-19.”

“We want to assure members of the public and families of the minors who are being cared for in Mavambe that they are safe and there is no need to panic.”

Tiva said strict Covid-19 regulations were being adhered to at the secure care centre to ensure that staff members and the children were safe.

“The situation is manageable as there is no overcrowding at the secure care centre that has a capacity of accommodating 70 children,” said Tiva.
