4000 vaccinations at Hlokomela

“Despite the fake news out there, vaccinations work. There are side effects but they are way less than that of catching Covid-19.”

Over 1400 farmworkers and other community members in Hoedspruit received their jabs last week as the vaccine rollout continues.

According to a statement by Hlokomela’s MJ du Preez they had another three vaccination days in partnership with the Sekororo Hospital.

“It has been a very challenging process to organise and manage these vaccination drives but the Sekororo outreach team are superhuman and extremely motivate. These nurses and data capturers are the real unsung heroes of the national vaccination rollout.

“We are so unbelievably thankful for this partnership, especially knowing that this particular team is very small compared to other vaccination teams but is still able to do such a large number of people.”

Nationally the average nurse is expected to do about 50 shots per day, but this outreach team’s nurses average between 150 and 200. “It is a true reflection of their commitment.” Du Preez said since the start of the vaccination drives at Hlokomela, they have helped facilitate nearly 4000 vaccinations.

Du Preez warned that Covid-19 numbers were again rising quickly in Hoedspruit and people should not go to the vaccination centre if they were feeling ill.

“Rather play it safe and get an antigen test done. If you have had Covid recently, you must wait 30 days before getting the vaccination. “If you had serious symptoms and ended up in the hospital, it is best to wait 90 days before getting vaccinated.

“If you are pregnant you can only get the vaccination after 14 weeks and up until roughly 35 weeks,” said Du Preez. He further thanked the community spirit from individuals and businesses that have been donating water, food, and fruits to the teams working on the site.

Other secondary sites where residents can receive their jabs in the Maruleng area include Lofdal farm, Mooi Plaas, Enable Community Hall, Mabins Clinic, and Hlohlokwe Community Hall.
