Woman in court for child neglect

Police investigations, which included the Department of Social Development saw the suspect being tracked down at her boyfriend’s house.

A 32-year-old woman was arrested on Monday for alleged child neglect. This follows after information that the accused tends to leave her six vulnerable children alone at home. 

Police investigations, which included the Department of Social Development, on Monday 23 August saw the suspect being tracked down at her boyfriend’s house in one of the Giyani areas and was immediately arrested. 

According to police spokesperson, Const Ridgewell Rikhotso, preliminary investigations were conducted and it was revealed that the suspect left her six children alone in the house and unattended for two weeks.

“The incident happened at Nkurhi village in the Sadoma settlement. She was arrested after police were tipped off that there were children at the suspect’s house without supervision. Police reacted swiftly on the matter,” said Rikhotso. 

According to the information gathered, some of the villagers alleged that this conduct was a tendency for the woman. They also told the police that in 2019 one of her daughters, then aged nine was brutally raped rape while the mother was absent from home.

The ages of the children range between eight and fifteen. All are still minors. Five of them were taken to a place of safety. She appeared before the Giyani Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday 25 August.
