Sisters start their own poultry business

Mavona Kay Egg and Poultry has quickly made a name for itself as one of the preferred producers of eggs in the region.

This family business was started by four sisters, Ntsako, Khanyisa, Katekani, and Ashley Khosa in June last year.

Khanyisa was inspired by her former employer who also produces eggs commercially and she saw a gap in the Tzaneen area.

The sisters asked their father, Willy Khosa, to fund their idea and being the great father that he is, he gladly assisted them to set up the business.

However, the foursome quickly realised that running their own business requires more than enthusiasm.

“With little knowledge of running this kind of business, we got conflicting opinions on how to feed the chickens.

“However we eventually got assistance from the department of agriculture and Khanyisa’s former employer.

“Despite the challenges we grew in both knowledge of egg farming and the business side of things,” Katekani explained.

They are currently supplying households and small businesses.

They also do home deliveries at a fee.

The Khosas were born and bred in Nkowankowa township, but the chicken house is based in Sasekani village just outside Maake.

Their dream is to have their produce sold nationwide, alongside well-known brands.

Their long-term goal is to expand into livestock farming as they believe food production contributes greatly to the economy of the country.

“We would encourage young people to take farming seriously in order to reduce the high level of unemployment.

“You can never go wrong with food production as people have to eat every day, there is always a demand,” added Katekani.

The girls thanked their father for supporting them and helping out with the chickens when he is not at work.

One of their challenges is access to capital to enlarge their hatchery as the demand is growing.

They appeal to funders or companies who can mentor them in running their business to assist.
