Spend a year with little Daniël Otto

With the December holidays behind us and the New Year’s resolutions which might not have been executed as we've hoped, we're left with the question of how to deal with 2021.

How about spending “A Year With Daniël”?

Most residents are familiar with his story: Daniël Otto was born with muscular dystrophy, which means that his muscles are too weak for him to stand and walk.

The Hoedspruit community has done so much for Daniël for which his parents, Neels and Marina Otto, are truly thankful. In their own words:

“We would like to thank the Hoedspruit community, our family, and friends with all our hearts for their continued support during each fundraiser we have had for Daniël up to date. We know it might sound like a cliché, but we would certainly not be lying if we said – without all of your help and support Daniël would not have been doing as well as he is doing right now.

“He is a happy and confident little man. We could not have asked for any better. We are incredibly grateful for every single little bit of support! We would also like to give a special thanks to Traci and her team at African Dream Horse Safaris for believing in our little Lion Heart, and helping him to become stronger each time he goes for his riding exercises with you.”

Although all the support is profoundly appreciated, Daniël’s annual expenses never stop. His physiotherapy, neurophysiotherapy, orthotics, pediatric neurologist, pediatric cardiologist, pediatric pulmonologist, AC therapy (play therapy), and special needs assistance adds up to just shy of R100 000 per year.

Belinda Barkas from Pam Golding has generously offered to take part in two ultra races this year as her contribution to Daniel’s Lion Heart Challenge.

Her challenge to residents is to contribute by sponsoring her per kilometer. Once off contributions can also be made.

She will first take part in the 80km Mac Mac Ultra on 22 May, and then again in the Karkloof 100 Miler (160km) from 24 to 26 September.
