Land claimants have to wait a bit longer

Land claimants who lodged their claims between 1 July 2014 and 27 July 2016 will have to wait a bit longer before their claims are resolved.

This after the Constitutional Court interdicted the Commission on Restitution of Land Rights from processing those claims until it has finalised the claims lodged by 31 December 1998 or until Parliament passes a new law providing for the re-opening of lodgment of land claims.

“The Constitutional Court ordered that the claims that were lodged between 1 July 2014 and 27 July 2016 are validly lodged, but it interdicted the Commission from processing those claims until the outstanding land claims lodged by 31 December 1998 are settled,” said the Regional Land Claims Commission spokesperson, Avhashoni Magada.

Magada said the commission has suspended the lodgment of new land claims and will focus on finalising all outstanding land claims lodged by 31 December 1998.

“The Commission will contact you directly and communicate widely once we have been granted permission to begin dealing with these claims.

Please be aware of criminals, you cannot pay money to fast track your land claim, the Restitution Land Claims Process in South Africa is a free government process, no money is ever payable to anyone including State or Restitution Commission officials,” said Magada.

Land claimants are advised to contact the commission’s office only to update their contact details. National office: 0800 007 095 or 012 407 4400. Limpopo office: 015 284 6300.
