Moving to the beat of the music

Herald asked Tzaneen dance school owner and teacher, Annemieke Osmers of The Dance Place @ Ben Vorster, why dancing is such a great activity for children.

Dance and movement patterns are fantastic for young and old, says Annemieke Osmers.

Starting to dance at a young age has several benefits:

• It builds self-confidence.

• It promotes body control, core strength and muscle tone.

• It teaches discipline and endurance.

• It stimulates the brain and creativity.

• It develops gross motor skills.

Tegan Baker (6): “I love dancing, it makes me feel happy and free!”
Mika Coetsee (6): “I want to be on the stage where everyone is watching me. I cannot wait to hear what we are going to be this year, bunnies or butterflies.”
Christo Horring (5): “I like jumping and doing cartwheels and handstands.”

Annemieke says that when you dance various ‘happy hormones’ are produced which are great for your physical and mental condition.

Annemieke says she herself danced from a very young age.

“It was challenging to stay motivated especially when dance steps gets intricate and you struggle to get it right. But like any activity you undertake, you have a responsibility to be the best version of yourself; what you put in you get out,” says Annemieke.

“Perseverance is probably the greatest trait you can give your child. It is a trait that will equip him or her for the future.”

She says that a good support system is key to success and parents that are involved in their children’s activities are what keep dancers motivated.

“Dance is a very competitive world and you have to have a ‘thick skin’, but with hard work, support and strict rules you will be successful.” One of her favourite sayings is: “It’s not how many times you fall, it’s how many times you get up.”
