Makhubele sworn in as MP after legal battle

Giyani-based Ponani Petunia Makhubele was finally sworn-in as a Member of Parliament (MP) last week.

Makhubele, a member of ANC Bongi Mabunda branch, was sworn in as an MP after a protracted legal battle with the ruling party over the mysterious disappearance of her name from the list of party members going to parliament shortly after the general elections in 2019.

“It’s not a victory for me but it is a victory for all members of the ANC who continue to suffer depression because of the injustices that are taking place within the organisation,” said Makhubela after the ANC lost its application for leave to appeal against her deployment.

Makhubele was sworn in alongside six other ANC members who had to fill vacancies in the National Assembly left vacant by the passing away of the party MP’s.
