Weekend heavy rain did not cause much havoc in Mopani

No major incidences were reported in the Mopani district regarding the storms and heavy rain.

This is according to Mopani District Municipality spokesperson Odas Ngobeni.

He said the few incidences that were reported occurred on Sunday, 24 January.

“Trees fell over on the Magoebaskloof road. One of these trees was very big and blocked the entire road. There were also reports of blocked drainage on the Khujwana Bridge on the R36 and debris on the R36 at Manoutsa,” said Ngobeni.

He said SANRAL’s Routine Road Maintenance (RRM) teams responded to these incidents immediately and all issues were resolved quickly.

Ngobeni further said there was a tree that fell on a house at Magoebaskloof, however, occupants of the house escaped without injuries.

“A low-level bridge on a gravel road at Magoebaskloof was also reported as flooded. The situation was noted and monitored. Issues related to storm water accumulation on the R528 George’s Valley road and D21 Sekororo Road were given through to the Department of Public Works for attention,” he said.

He said although there were reports of a lot of rain in Giyani, no reports of damage were received.

“We also appreciate the proactive steps taken by the Kruger National Park to evacuate susceptible camps ahead of time and to close roads which were inaccessible. We continue to keep an eye on the identified low-lying areas,” he concluded.
