Police condemn mob justice at Ngove village

Community members of Ngove village outside Giyani went on a rampage on Wednesday evening after a body of a 60-year-old woman who went missing on Tuesday, 27 October was discovered hanging from a tree in the nearby bushes earlier on.

It is alleged the angry mob accused the deceased’s husband and his friend of being involved in Phosa Egnes Maswanganyi’s disappearance and her death.

Police spokesperson Col Moatshe Ngoepe said the community members torched her 64-year-old husband’s two rondavel houses and thereafter set him alight.

He was badly injured and taken to hospital for medical treatment.

“The Giyani police together with the Public Order Police (Pops) Unit responded quickly to the scene. The crowd had already left and moved to the other house where they tried to burn it too.

The police responded swiftly and managed to stop them,” said Ngoepe.

He said at this stage, the situation is still quiet but the Pops is continuing to monitor it, in case of any eventualities.

Provincial commissioner of police in Limpopo Lt Gen Nneke Ledwaba has condemned in the strongest possible terms the brutal attack.

“We cannot allow this kind of behaviour to rule our province where people ignore our call to work with us and refrain from taking the law into their own hands.

The suspects must be hunted down and brought to book,” said Ledwaba.
