Limpopo Premier saddened by ongoing killings of people and GBV

Limpopo Premier Chupu Matabatha has expressed his concern on the recent killings, including police officers in the province.  

Mathabatha expressed his concerns during SALGA’s provincial members assembly held virtually on Tuesday.

“Please allow me to pass my heartfelt condolences to the families, relatives and friends of all the people who have been brutally murdered recently. The provincial government is deeply saddened and disturbed by the growing number of reports of people being killed by the other. I am calling on all family members, relatives, friends, churches, NGOs, Traditional Leaders, community members and all peace loving people of Limpopo Province, to take care of one another. We have so far, had to endure the hardship of senseless killings. Our message is that these killings must stop and stop now. It is our collective responsibility to look out and help each other during difficult times as we also do during good times. We repeat that One life is One too many” said Premier Chupu Mathabatha.

The Premier also spoke sharply against the mushrooming cases of Gender Based Violence in the province. Spokesperson for the Premier Willy Mosoma said in October alone, police are working on five serious cases.

“In Lephalale, a 34 year old female police officer has allegedly shot and killed her husband, shot and seriously injured her 17 year old daughter, before turning the gun on herself; Nkowankowa, Gladwin Mboweni, a 51 year old father allegedly killed himself and his two daughters aged 13 and 9, by setting the house they were sleeping in on fire; Seshego, Alucia Mohlaloga, a teenager, was allegedly killed by a police officer, who randomly fired bullets into her room, accusing Alucia’s mother of witchcraft,” said Mosoma.

He added that in Polokwane a 35 year old Tebogo Mphuti and her friend Mokoena Mabusela-Leshabane, aged 46, were allegedly shot and killed in a suspected hit.

Mosoma said the police in another case the police in Dennilton are investigating a case of murder following the brutal killing of Colonel Seroka, Groblersdal Police Station Commander, who was shot and killed outside his house at Maganagobuswa.

“The above reports are among cases which have been reported recently to authorities.”

The premier further called on those who feel overwhelmed by problems and challenges of life to seek professional help which is readily available in public and private facilities, instead of resorting to taking the lives of innocent people.

Mathabatha has called upon law enforcement agencies to do everything in their power to investigate and arrest all perpetrators of these brutal killings, he also called on to the courts to hand down harsher sentences to perpetrators.
