Jetty 3 shelter in Tzaneen closes down
The Department of Social Development in the province has confirmed that the Tzaneen homeless shelter at Jetty 3 will be moved to Musina.
The decision to move the homeless people to another location, comes after a large number of the residents of the shelter have been reunited with their families and only a handful of people have remained behind.
This will also apply for the various shelters across Limpopo as most of these temporary safe havens erected during the Covid-19 pandemic also have small numbers of occupants left.
“We have come to the decision to collapse the shelters, because keeping it open for only a few individuals in one location was no longer sustainable. We saw it fitting to place them under one roof, as it will be cost-efficient,” explained Witness Tiva, Social Development spokesman.

Tiva told Herald that the reason the department opted for Musina is that the majority of the homeless people were from Musina or the Vhembe area.
The department had established the shelters during lockdown level 5 with the aim of reducing unnecessary movements.
Tiva said that at level 5 the province had about 500 people who were staying at the shelters.
