Police tips on the prevention of stock theft

The tips for the prevention of stock theft prevention incidents are as follows: * Mark your animals: By law in South Africa, all livestock must be clearly marked with an unique identification number.

It is difficult to convict stock thieves when the ownership of animals cannot be proven.

*Animals must be regularly counted to identify losses and potential problems.

*Traders or auctioneers need certification to prove that they may sell livestock on the owner’s behalf.

*Transportation of livestock. – Transporters need a removal certificate unless the livestock is transported via public road going through your own land.

The certificate should contain the the following: Name and address of the person who issued the certificate, name and address of the owner of the livestock, the place from where and the destination the stock is being transported, names of the drivers and date of issue. The breed or type of stock and identification mark; number and the colour of the livestock.

*Know the movement of your livestock. Keep fences and gates well maintained and be observant.

*As a farmer, create close relationships with neighbouring communities to prevent theft of livestock.

*Make an investment in technology: Install CCTV cameras.

*Monitor the number of people who has access to your property.

*Report all stock theft cases immediately and keep a controlled livestock register.

*Participate effectively in the partnership policing activities.

*Employ trustworthy herdsmen.

*Report all stray animals or suspected stolen animals to the local police.
