Greater Tzaneen Municipality’s water restrictions

Greater Tzaneen Municipality has restricted the use of water from 6 July.

Restrictions applicable to all customers are: Watering/irrigation with municipal drinking water will not be allowed; No washing of vehicles with hosepipe; No filling of swimming pools is allowed; Commercial car washes must comply with industry best practices regarding water usage and recycle 50% of water; No washing or hosing down of hard-surfaced or paved areas with municipal drinking water; No new landscaping or sports fields may be established, except if irrigated only with non-drinking water; All properties where alternative, nondrinking water resources are used must display signage to this effect which is clearly visible from a public thoroughfare; Learning institutions, nurseries and customers with special requirements can apply for exemption from the above.

Consumers are encouraged to do the following: Install water efficient fittings and technologies to minimise water use.

Not use municipal drinking water excessively or unnecessarily: Wash vehicles, trailers, caravans and boats using a bucket or water less products; Flush toilets with grey water, rainwater or other non-drinking water; Fix pipe leaks as soon as possible to avoid water loss; Kindly report any pipe burst or leaks on municipal line as soon as possible; Re-use water to water gardens; Shorten showering time; Use a water glass to rinse when brushing your teeth; Harvest rainwater for gardening and car wash.

The municipality vowed to apply penalties to minimise excessive water use and also to provide protection for lower usage customers.
